Position: Communications Manager

Roles and Responsibilities

Managed, branded, designed, produced and distributed all media, marketing and communications for this nationally accredited land conservation nonprofit organization that has served the East Bay area since 1971. Save Mount Diablo’s (SMD) mission is to preserve, defend, and restore natural lands and open spaces in the Diablo Range---for wildlife and future generations to enjoy. SMD has helped to protect over 110,000 acres through land acquisition, stewardship, habitat restoration, and grassroots advocacy at the local, regional, and statewide levels; SMD also offers many recreational and educational programs.

Project Management & Team Coordination

    • Created and implemented communications plans, editorial calendars, project timelines, style guides, creative project briefs, and process manuals.

    • Strategized, planned, curated, edited and produced all marketing content for digital and print communications channels in support of programmatic and fundraising goals outlined by the strategic plan.

    • Hired, managed, coordinated and supervised staff, outside contractors, 3rd party vendors and volunteers. 

Branding & Design

  • Planned, re-designed and developed an extensive new custom website below cost on a tight budget. Built on the WordPress content management system, the new site is now modern, mobile-responsive, easy to navigate and user-friendly.

    • Since launching in January of 2018, user traffic increased by 17.5%, sessions increased by 20% and bounce rate reduced by 25%. Mobile users increased 27% and mobile page views increased 29%. Visit www.savemountdiablo.org    
  • Editor, designer, project manager and producer of all print publications; including the annual report, yearly calendar, capital campaign prospectus and the biannual Diablo Watch magazine--consistently meeting aggressive deadlines and reducing overall costs.

    • Led a redesign of the magazine that saw a positive response from members and stakeholders and drew significantly increased revenue through remittance--raising the return on investment. 
  • Prepared multimedia creative collateral for all events, including event programs, invitations, slideshows, signage, maps, merchandise, advertising and landing pages. Promoted events organically and through paid ad campaigns on social media, the website, in online directories, e-newsletters and press releases. 

  • Branded and coordinated public roll-out of a new annual hikes program across channels; now in its 3rd year, the program is now one of Save Mount Diablo’s most popular offerings and hikes sell out regularly. Branded outreach materials for $15MM Forever Wild Capital Campaign. 

  • Rebranded marketing collateral for several core programs and events, including membership, publications, business identity & events collateral, e-newsletters, social media, Planned Gifts, and appeals. 

Marketing & Communications

  • Press & External Media - Secured and managed annual media sponsorships. Coordinated media requests and follow-through, serving as the primary press and media contact. Produced advertisements/press releases and coordinated articles that were published in Bay Nature, Diablo Magazine, Sentinel Newspaper, Clayton/Concord Pioneer, East Bay Times/Mercury News, SF Chronicle, Antioch Herald, TheHomeMag, and Place

  • Video - Increased usage of video by producing more in-house creative content and also through coordinating with external producers. Re-marketed Audible Mount Diablo: Guides to the Outdoors interpretive video series  (previously available only on social media) as a podcast—significantly expanding distribution. Conceptualized strategic messaging and crafted talking points for 4 featured segments that aired on the NBC Bay Area show “Open Road with Doug McConnell,” broadcasting to viewers statewide

  • Promoted successful campaigns supporting various initiatives, including crowd-fundraising campaigns and grassroots organizing/advocacy campaigns to effectively influence environmental policy on State and Regional measures via website, e-marketing, social media, print and video content.

  • Grew presence on social media platforms, increasing visibility: Over 2 years, Facebook followers increased 17% while Instagram followers increased 255%. Also managed Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and Pinterest pages.

Roles and Responsibilities

Progressively increasing responsibilities from freelance web designer to Marketing Director of an established B2B/B2C medical and surgical supply company, growing profitable revenues annually. 

  • Led complete redesign and development of e-Commerce website (www.atsurgical.com) from end to end creating a fully customized, mobile responsive, cost-effective and user-friendly online storefront. Developed a master products inventory feed SKU system for product line of over 200 items, producing all visual and written content. Results include more traffic, improved shipping system, streamlined data management, new lead generation &  increased online revenue.

  • Implemented and managed online storefronts across multiple e-commerce marketplaces: Amazon, Etsy, ATG Stores, Wayfair, Google Shopping and others—increasing online sales by 15% in 2 years

  • Re-marketed a medical garment to target a niche demographic, which quickly became and remains a top-seller in AT Surgical’s product line of over 200 orthopedic and medical devices.

  • Directed and produced visual and written marketing content in-house, including product photography, all print collateral (packaging, labeling, advertisements, publications, and signage) and copywriting, reducing expenses for outsourcing.

  • Oversaw and ensured regulations compliance including annual FDA registration and brought the organization into PCI-DSS Compliance on e-Commerce site using SSL/HTTPS encryption and integrated a new payment gateway system.

  • Successfully re-negotiated merchant processing contracts, resulting in a significantly lower final rate of 1.1%+$0.11/credit card transaction vs. the standard 2.9%+$0.30/transaction.

  • Provided and coordinated IT support services including updates & general hardware/electronics maintenance, troubleshooting, software compatibility checks, debugging, management of web hosting services, printers, etc.
